A popular residential and commuter area south of Hamburg with good Metronom rail links (HVV fare zone), and at the same time the gateway to the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park. What belongs to the Nordheide
The Nordheide is the name for the northern edge of the Lüneburg Heath in the district of Harburg — it includes the town of Buchholz in der Nordheide (around 41,600 residents) along with the municipalities of Seevetal, Rosengarten, Jesteburg and Salzhausen. The region sits directly south of Hamburg and connects two worlds: a sought-after residential and commuter area with full infrastructure on one hand, and access to Central Europe's largest contiguous heathland on the other. To Hamburg: Metronom, not S-Bahn
Contrary to what many assume, the Nordheide is not served by the Hamburg S-Bahn, but by the Metronom regional trains — these run within the HVV fare zone, though, so commuters can use their usual transit-association ticket. From Buchholz (Nordheide), the RE4 and RB41 reach Hamburg Central Station in around 25 to 35 minutes; the Klecken station in Rosengarten is only about 20 minutes by rail from Hamburg, and Seevetal, with the Hittfeld, Meckelfeld and Maschen stations, is also well connected. For drivers, the A1, A7 and A39 all meet here — Maschen is also home to Europe's largest railway marshalling yard. This combination makes the Nordheide especially convenient for business travellers and contractors.
Working in the region
The Nordheide is far more than a bedroom community. Major employers include Krankenhaus Buchholz (the local hospital) and the construction company Hoth Tiefbau, headquartered in Buchholz, along with business and technology parks and the logistics sites around the Maschen marshalling yard.
